30th March :
Meeting the skiers

Tuperna at 18
One of the youngest participants in ACR is Tuperna Larsen from Sisimiut. Tuperna began her training on January 1st this year. She started to work out in the fitness centre and later brought out her skies to practice in the open air on the tracks. Part of her training programme was to cut down on candy, fizzy drinks and partying with her friends.
It’s the first time that Tuperna is going to participate in Arctic Circle Race, and she made the decision because she’s done Cross County ever since she was a child. “It was always only for fun that I have been skiing, but now I wanted to do a bit more seriously,” Tuperna explains.

With a little help from my friends
Tuperna has had good support in her friend Malene Nielsen who is also going to be in the race. They have motivated each other in the months up to the kick-off tomorrow. Tuperna and Malene are not going to ski together once they are on the tracks, because that will only create competition between them. They are however looking out for each other if the weather gets nasty, and they are also going to cook together at night in the camp.

What’s for supper?
Malene has prepared their meals, which will be Greenlandic reindeer and musk. Tuperna has stocked up on dried capelin that she’s going to eat with fresh apples, and also the Greenlandic speciality mattak, the skin from a whale, is on the menu.

Hopes and expectations
I asked Tuperna what she’s looking forward to the most.
“To have fun,” she says, but instantly corrects herself: “No, actually it is getting over the finishing line,” Tuperna says. She adds that she hopes for nice and sunny weather and that she looks forward to relax and have fun in the camp. “And eating lots and lots of chocolates and candy,” Tuperna says with a happy grin.
Tuperna had hoped for number 007, but she is carrying number 249. The best of luck to her and all the other participants in the 10th Arctic Circle Race!
