Arctic Circle Race celebrates its 10th Anniversary in the ACR-week of 28th March – 4th April 2006.
Arctic Circle Race began the preparations for ACR 2006 a long time ago. It is the 10th time that ACR is taking place and ACR will celebrate it together with the following arrangements.
The 250th Anniversary of the town of Sisimiut
The jubilee of Arctic Circle Race is taking place at the same time as the town of Sisimiut celebrates its 250th Anniversary. Sisimiut was founded on the 3rd of April 1756 by Niels Egede and Anders Olsen, when they established a trading station.
Which means the town of Sisimiut celebrates its 250th Anniversary on 3 April 2006, which will no doubt be celebrated in the traditional manner.
3 April 2006 is also the day that the Arctic Circle Race hosts its Gala Evening and 10th Anniversary. The local authority of Sisimiut and the Arctic Circle Race are working together on a joint celebration which will provide unforgettable memories for the people of the town, guests and race competitors.
Various arrangements are still at the planning stage, but the following programme has already been decided upon by the
ACR.
Greenland Dog sled racing championships.
The Greenland dog sled racing championships or “Avannaata Qimussersua” are held each year in North Greenland. Dog sledges are driven in the Greenland dog sled areas pulled by Greenland
dogs. The dog sled area stretches from Sisimiut in the south to Qaanaaq in the north along the west coast of Greenland and the whole of the east
coast.
For the very first time, the championships will be held in Sisimiut on 1 April 2006. The race will be over a 40 km course and around 40 sleds will take part, after coming through heats in the various dog sled
areas.
The hilly terrain around Sisimiut will offer new challenges to the drivers from the north who are more used to flatter stretches over sea
ice.
Arctic Sports Clinic
In association with the Arctic Circle Race 2006 the medical training council is hosting a course in Sisimiut focused on Arctic sports medicine, including strain injuries and treatment strategies, and on shoulders, hips and knees in particular.
Training programmes for strain injuries, adapted for general practice, will be explained and tested. The idea is to encourage people to plan preventative measures, with advice and checks for general practice
The medical training council and ACR are coordinating the following:
A pre-race lecture on preventative measures and treatment for strain injuries for competitors in the Arctic Circle Race.
After the race, there will be a workshop on actual injuries, for participants from the Arctic Circle Race.
ACR races and jubilees
The medical training course also has the effect, that ACR is arranging 4 races during the ACR
week:
1. The traditional 160 km race over 3 days. The race which now celebrates its 10th Anniversary
2. ACR 100 which like the traditional 160 km race is taking places over 3 days but only covers 100 km. ACR 100 celebrates its 5th Anniversary since it started in 2002 as a race for those who would like to try a shorter distance before they were ready for the 160 km.
3. MIKI ACR which is a race over 2 days for children in all ages. This race is arranged together with SSP – the local cross country
club. MIKI ACR also celebrates a jubilee in 2006. MIKI ACR started up in 2001 but were cancelled in 2004 because of the
weather, so MIKI ACR is taking places for the 5th time in 2006.
4. ACR DOCS is a new race which will be a special cross-country ski race for doctors on the medical training
course.
Everybody is welcome
Arctic Circle Race is still a race for both ordinary racers and the elite. ACR is still in the planning stage to find international cross country stars for its Anniversary. Several contacts are made but it is still too early to announce it.
Also as usual the ACR participants can during the ACR week book a dogsledge trip and/or snow mobile trip of up to the duration of one day. Like last year wives/husbands/friends of those who participate have the option to follow ACR from a dogsledge. Wives/husbands/friends can also choose to drive to the camp on Friday and back on Sunday on the back of a snow mobile. Contact the Secretariat for more information.
