Ilulissat

Ilulissat means "the icebergs". Most think it is an appropriate name as they behold the fantastic Jakobshavn Fjord covered by a rugged, white carpet of icebergs, some of which are more than one hundred metres high and more than 30,000 years old. In summer, you can sit by the fjord in the glow of the midnight sun sipping a drink with ice cubes that are thousands of years old! The fjord's icebergs originate from Greenland's second-fastest producing glacier located at the head of the fjord producing 20 million tons of ice every 24 hours - as much water as New York City consumes in one year!

Ilulissat is the third largest town in Greenland with 4,000 inhabitants. The citizens are joined by at least 6,000 sled dogs, which means that Ilulissat is somewhat of a Mecca for dogsledding. The peak season is from March to April, where the wonderful experience of flickering northern lights across the sky is an extra bonus. Just some of the many other trips departing from Ilulissat are boat trips among the enormous icebergs, visits to the surrounding settlements and helicopter flights to the inland ice cap or the impressive territory around the Eqi Glacier.

Knud Rasmussen's birthplace is located in Ilulissat and today it houses the Jakobshavn Museum. Other historic sights of interest in the busy, industrious town are the two beautiful churches, a whaling, sealing and fishing museum, and an art museum.

Ilulissat has gone to great lengths to create ideal conditions for conferences, meetings, customised package trips and incentives for business people. The presence of three local tour operators means that Ilulissat is ready to solve the most sophisticated assignments, and two four-star hotels ensure a very comfortable stay. At the same time, the town is easy to get to via the modern airport.
