Destination Introduktion

Narsaq means 'the plain' in Greenlandic, referring to the beautiful plain on which the town is built.

Both the Norse and the Greenlanders immediately decided to settle on this lush land. There is a spring nearby the town where the locals still accumulate water for their own consumption. The waters around the Narsaq peninsula are rich with seals, Salmon, Arctic Char and small whales. Even reindeer are present in the area.

Today, the municipality has a total population of approx. 2,100 people, of which 1,700 live in Narsaq town. The rest of the population lives in Qassiarsuk, Igaliku, Narsarsuaq or at one of the many sheep-farms.

People have lived on "the plain" for several thousand years. The first settlers were descendants of the Saqqaq culture. They arrived around 2500 BC, but a change in the climate made them disappear around year 0 - Not until the Norse arrived and settled in the country around year 982 the area was populated again.

Through the centuries, the original Inuit population has mixed with the Danish people that moved here - so nowadays you cannot tell by the looks whether a person is of Greenlandic or Danish origin.

The Inuit tongue is called Kalaallisut, which is a dialect of a similar tongue also spoken in Canada and Alaska. Within Greenland, the language is divided in three dialects and most of the time you can even hear how each town has its own dialect within the dialect.
