Hiking Trips

Sisimiut is surrounded by the sea and impressive hills. "Præstefjeldet" (the priest hill) toi the north and "Kællingehætten" (the old woman's hood) to the south challenge the visitors to go hiking. Because of the long distance to the Inland Ice, you may find an endless hinterland east of the town which offers rich opportunities.
It is not always easy to find your way and, therefore, the local areas have marked hiking routes of various difficulty from quiet hikes to exiting hill climbings. For further information on the markings, please contact the Sisimiut Tourist Information.

Kangerlussuaq - Sisimiut
This route is the classic hike in Greenland for the hardened wanderer and others who like challenges. The route goes through landscapes which vary a lot. From the dry inland at Kangerlussuaq to the rolling ground with the high hills by the coast. Considering the length of the hike, approx. 7 - 10 days, it is a hard hike which should not be challenged unless you have made preparations from home.

Fishing
The fishing around Sisimiut enjoys a very good reputation. The world's biggest halibut and the world's biggest wolffish have been caught in the Sisimiut waters.

Trout and sea fishery require a fishing license which is issued by the Sisimiut Tourist Information or the police. The price is DKK 200 a month. There are no limitations as regards how many fish you may catch, however, it is customary only to catch the number of fish you may use yourself. The fish offal must be buried. It must not be thrown in the river or left by the bank.

Præstefjeldet (the priest hill)

Duration: 5 hours. Price: 425 DKK

Præstefjeldet lies north of Sisimiut on the way to the airport. The name of the hill originates from the pastor who lived below the hill in the 1700s. Today, you may still see the foundation of the house, which has now been moved to its present position in Sisimiut - it houses the tourist office. The hike to the top of the hill is a beautiful hike where you may see all the way down over the town and the surrounding areas. As the hill is facing south, it is very green with many bushes, flowers and moss.
From the top of the hill, you will have a beautiful view of the town and "Kangerluarsuk Tulleq" (the first inlet).

Kællingehætten (the old woman's hood)

Duration: 5-7 hours. Price: DKK 225

Kællingehætten stands as a beautiful and proud landmark above Sisimiut. Its rather special name is due to the look of the hill, which reminds you of the women's parka. In Greenlandic the hill is called Nasaasaaq, which means "something that looks like a cap/hood".
It is the toughest climb in the area of Sisimiut as you must both hike and climb. Close to the top, you will find two ropes. However, your efforts will be rewarded when you reach the top and see the fabulous view both to the north and towards Præstefjeldet (the priest hill) and down south towards the high bluish hills. It is also possible to see far into the Amerloq inlet and look down at the abandoned Assaqutaq district.
